Share The Road Memorial Ride
Dedication of The Share The Road Memorial at Gainesville’s Depot Park
Sponsored by Bike Florida and The Gainesville Cycling Club. Times and details TBA

On Christmas Eve day in 1996 six cyclists on their way from Gainesville to St. Augustine were struck by a distracted driver on a rural road. Two of the cyclists were killed and the other four were severely injured. Friends of the cyclists erected six rammed-earth sculptures at the site of what is now Gainesville’s Depot Park. The sculptures were embedded with parts from the ruined bicycles of the stricken cyclists. That incident spurred a coalition of cycling advocates to launch a successful drive to win legislative authorization for the Share The Road License Tags. Sale of those tags have since raised millions of dollars for bicycle safety and education in Florida.

Bike Florida has raised $16,000 to restore the sculptures, which will be renamed the Share The Road Memorial. Formal Dedication of the Share The Road Memorial will take place on the day after the 4th Annual Share The Road Celebration of Cycling.
